Enjoy the best of New Zealand, right from your vehicle window! Here are five of New Zealand’s most scenic roads.

1. The Milford Road

Starting in Te Anau, this 118-kilometre journey to the unofficial eighth wonder of the world,  Milford Sound, is absolutely breathtaking. As you drive through the heart of Fiordland National Park, you will be spoilt for picturesque points of interest; Mirror Lakes, Pop’s View, Lake Marian, Eglinton Valley, Key Summit hiking trail and the Chasm are all sure to delight even the most seasoned tourist.

2. Twin Coast Discovery Highway

The Twin Coast Discovery highway provides an ideal route for getting the best out of Northland. The loop journey starts and ends in Auckland, and ventures up the Kauri Coast, through the stunning Waipoua Kauri Forest and meanders around the sleepy Hokianga Harbour before heading towards the iconic Bay of Islands. Explore towering Kauri forests, pristine beaches and some of the most important cultural sites in New Zealand, all without so much as a detour.

3. Queenstown to Glenorchy

Escape the hustle and bustle of famous tourist hub Queenstown, and drive along the shores of stunning Lake Wakatipu as you pass rolling hills and impressive icy mountain peaks. At the end of the road, Glenorchy is a charming settlement, perfect for a relaxing coffee before heading back to the city, or head out to the tiny settlement of Paradise (!!) via gravel road.

4. The Desert Road

The mountains meet the desert on the Tongariro Volcanic Plateau, which is accessible via State Highway 1. From Waiouru to Turangi, try not to be distracted by the trio of volcanoes rising from the tussocky plains, boulders and snow-melt streams. This landscape is truly unique, and major highlight of any trip up the main highway of New Zealand.

5. Arthur’s Pass

Arthur’s Pass is the most famous mountain pass road in New Zealand, for good reason. This journey across the impressive Southern Alps links the remote West Coast to the East and takes you through Arthur’s Pass Village (one of NZ’s highest settlements), the Devil’s Punchbowl Falls, and past hundreds of picture-perfect viewpoints.

Wherever you are based in the world, you can bring your vehicle to New Zealand to explore these roads for yourself. The McCulloughs team ships cars, caravans, and motorbikes among a wide range of vehicles from all over the world, to help both tourists and residents enjoy all the scenery the roads of NZ have to offer.
